Public Order & Policing

astynomia

The primary mission of the police should be to protect ordinary citizens, not politicians or business elites. It is a democratic failure when the general public remains unprotected while law enforcement serves the privileged. The police must be safeguarded from privatization and undue influence from powerful private interests.

The NIKI Democratic Movement believes that strengthening the integrity and professional role of the Greek police is crucial. This requires revising regulations, providing proper training, upgrading infrastructure, and ensuring fair personnel management. The goal is to create a professional, impartial police force that can effectively serve the public, free from political unionization.

Persistent criminal activity must be strictly punished to serve as both a general and specific deterrent. Systematic illegal activity in geographic “ghettos” should be eradicated, and crime should become an unprofitable endeavor, especially for corruption and organized crime. A fundamental restructuring of the penitentiary system is also necessary.

Regarding the Coast Guard, a comprehensive approach is needed to address its challenges. This includes increasing personnel, modernizing equipment, improving training, and establishing a specialized academy. The daily heroes who enforce the law and save lives must receive the support and resources they deserve.

Civil Protection

Civil protection must be entirely free from political party interference. Effective organization, planning, prevention, and preparedness are essential for saving lives and property. NIKI believes that ensuring citizens’ safety depends on respecting individuals and their property, supporting first responders, and fostering strong cooperation among all stakeholders.

The disaster in Thessaly exposed severe shortcomings in the Ministry of Civil Protection and the entire state mechanism. The common excuse of “climate crisis” is unconvincing. The lack of personnel and resources highlights the need for significant funding and a complete overhaul of civil protection strategies.

NIKI proposes a detailed risk assessment plan per region to prepare for all types of disasters. This must include an emergency plan for large-scale crises, including potential food shortages caused by global geopolitical instability. National and individual self-sufficiency should be key priorities.

The so-called “climate crisis narrative,” originating from the Kyoto Protocol, has led to flawed policies, including the misnaming of the Ministry as the “Ministry of Climate Crisis.” Instead, civil protection should focus on establishing 13 Regional Civil Protection Operational Centers, strengthening municipal response teams, and ensuring round-the-clock preparedness across all relevant agencies.

Additionally, citizens should be encouraged to stockpile basic supplies (such as food and water) for at least seven days to be ready for potential disasters.

The protection of lives and property depends on independent, well-structured policies, not political narratives.
